(3” pot) Spirea ulmaria - Meadowsweet is an herbaceous perennial from the rose family. Flowering creamy blossom heads with honeyed fragrances on stems that grow to 4 feet or taller. Prefers sun to part shade and moist, rich humus or well-composted clay soils. Root development in year and flowering begins in year 2. Slow self seeder. New plants may not appear until early summer. Original source of pain-relieving salicylates, replaced by willow for easier digestion. Meadowsweet is a big draw for bees, moths, dragonflies, hoverflies, lady bugs, and other pollinators.
