(4” pot) Actaea racemosa - 4-6’ tall, 2-4’ wide. Also called black bugbane, black snakeroot, rattle-top, or fairy candle, blue cohosh is native to Vermont. The roots and rhizomes are used in traditional medicine by Native Americans as an analgesic, sedative, and anti-inflammatory. Blooms arrive in late July to early August and emit a mild, sweet, but fetid odor that attracts bumblebees and other pollinators. The seeds are a favorite of birds but are generally deer resistant. This plant is toxic to humans and animals if ingested in large amounts. Prefers rich soil and part shade. Zone 3
