American Elm

$8.75
sold out

(2-3’ bare root) Ulmus americana - 100’ tall. In years past, the American Elm was used widely as a shade tree because of its fast growth and graceful broad and wide looking form, living up to several 100 years old. It is an extremely hardy tree that can withstand winter temperatures as low as  −44 F . It is easily transplanted but is susceptible to Dutch Elm disease. The seeds are eaten by birds and small animals; deer and rabbits will browse the twigs. Grows in most soils, most commonly bottomlands and floodplains, but can also thrive in well-drained soils. Zones 2-9
